An invitation to the Mayor’s Parlour

08 February 2023

Meeting the Mayor of Hillingdon was a treat for members of People ConneX. They enjoyed a lovely tea in the Mayor’s Parlour on 8 February 2023.

By invitation only

The Mayor of Hillingdon, Cllr Becky Haggar and her Consort, Mr Marios Kaikitis, extended a very warm welcome to their guests. They pointed out that entering the Mayor’s Parlour at the Civic Centre in Uxbridge is by invitation only. That’s only to be expected when you’re in the company of the First Citizen of the London Borough of Hillingdon – The Worshipful the Mayor of the Borough of Hillingdon’s other official title.

Cllr Haggar explained that as First Citizen, she outranks the Prime Minister in authority over Hillingdon. She is the apolitical leader of 300,000 residents and the only person she defers to is King Charles.

Reaching out to all

You might expect a person whose role includes keeping council meetings in order to be austere or unapproachable, but Becky Haggar is the complete opposite. She was keen to listen to a cross-section of views about Hillingdon.

Both Becky and Marios spoke passionately about the causes close to their heart. They support The Daniella Logun Foundation and The Magically Marvellous Picture House.

Diversity and purpose

The rich mix of people, places and history in Hillingdon is a source of inspiration to Becky Haggar. She emphasised how she values “connection and finding a purpose for everyone”.

Looking around the Mayor’s Parlour, it was clear that these sentiments were echoed by Cllr Haggar’s guests. From different backgrounds, and for different reasons we shared a common aim to form closer connections in the future.
